Dear Manchester Community! ¡Querida comunidad de Manchester!
We had another month of exciting learning and fun! We want to highlight some important things coming up this week and share what has happened throughout the month of October! We also want to thank our parent volunteers who have helped us to transform our school spaces including our culinary kitchen, collaborative space with new furniture, and our beautiful landscape—a special shout-out to parents Vidal, Tony, Rogelio, Socorro, Oscar, Franny, and Goija. We appreciate you and thank you!

Important Upcoming Dates/Próximas fechas importantes:
Tuesday, October 31st- Halloween: One of our goals at Manchester is to ensure ALL students feel a sense of belonging at school. I want to encourage all of us to respect that Halloween is not a holiday that is celebrated by all of our school community. Tuesday is still a regular school day and we want to create an environment where all students and staff feel welcome whether they celebrate Halloween or not. While costumes will be allowed to be worn to school on Tuesday, please ensure that your child is not bringing any weapon-related items. Students may enjoy wearing masks but will be asked to remove them during instructional time. Overall, costumes should be school-appropriate as it is a regular school day. If you have any questions regarding costumes, please reach out to the school so we can answer these questions. If you are interested in joining our committee to reimagine how to incorporate all of the holidays celebrated by our students and families to ensure they are reflected in the fabric of our school community, please let Mrs. Herrera know.
Martes 31 de octubre: Halloween: uno de nuestros objetivos en Manchester es garantizar que TODOS los estudiantes se sientan que pertenecen a la escuela. Quiero animarnos a todos a respetar que Halloween no es un día festivo celebrado por toda nuestra comunidad escolar. El martes sigue siendo un día escolar normal y queremos crear un ambiente donde todos los estudiantes y el personal se sientan bienvenidos, ya sea que celebren Halloween o no. Si bien se permitirá el uso de disfraces en la escuela el martes, asegúrese de que su hijo no traiga ningún artículo relacionado con armas. Wednesday, November 1st- No School: There is no school on Wednesday due to Teacher Workday. There will also be no before and after school programming. The Dia De Los Muertos Bajo La Luna will be taking place in the evening from 5:00-7:30 p.m. at the Point Arena Lighthouse. Many of our students will have their art on display for those interested in attending. Miércoles 1 de noviembre: No hay clases: No hay clases el miércoles debido al día laboral de los maestros. Week of November 6th- November 9th- School Conferences: During the week of November 6th, we will host Parent Conferences. Monday through Thursday, school will be dismissed at 1:45 p.m. We will still have before and after-school programming during this week as an option for families. You will receive further information about the conference schedule by November 1st. Semana del 6 al 9 de noviembre: conferencias escolares: durante la semana del 6 de noviembre, organizaremos conferencias para padres. The pictures below show photos from our field trip to the Health Fair (including some of our students using the fire hose with our local fire department, climbing into the back of an ambulance to learn more about medical services, and learning through the use of maps).

Below was our schoolwide Stone Soup lesson where students cooked Stone Soup for the whole school!

The Water Ambassador Program was brought to our site where students learned to study all about water!

As part of the water science unit, students created 3D models of aquatic ecosystems and watersheds. The students in grades 1-3 researched an aquatic ecosystem. They learned about the living and nonliving parts of the ecosystem and then created a diorama of the ecosystem and its plants and animals. The 4-5th graders researched watersheds. Then they created a watershed, designing for actual water to be "shed" into models of water forms. The 7-8th graders are researching water pollution and solutions and preparing to create visual models to show their findings. Way to go Ms. Avis and science students!
Como parte de la unidad de ciencias del agua, los estudiantes crearon modelos 3D de ecosistemas acuáticos y cuencas hidrográficas. Los estudiantes de 1º a 3º grado investigaron un ecosistema acuático. Aprendieron sobre las partes vivas y no vivas del ecosistema y luego crearon un diorama del ecosistema y sus plantas y animales. Los alumnos de 4º y 5º grado investigaron las cuencas hidrográficas. Luego crearon una cuenca hidrográfica, diseñando agua real para "derramarla" en modelos de formas de agua. Los estudiantes de 7º a 8º grado están investigando la contaminación del agua y sus soluciones y preparándose para crear modelos visuales para mostrar sus hallazgos. ¡Así se hace, Sra. Avis y estudiantes de ciencias!
